Key Position Battles

  • Second Base: Brendan Ryan vs. Adam Kennedy – I do not include Dustin Ackley in this battle because I believe he will need a bit more seasoning down on the farm before hitting the big show. When he is ready though, 2nd base will be his. As far as this battle goes I believe the Mariners will go with the younger option in Brendan Ryan. He is a good defender and can hit a little bit at the bottom of the order. Neither of these guys really hit a lick last season so no reason to believe the rebuilding Mariners team won’t opt to go younger. 2nd Base pick: Brendan Ryan
  • Left Field: Michael Saunders vs. Milton Bradley – Neither one of these two are a great option. Can not imagine either hitting very much but Milton Bradley is a complete mental case and always seems to do something that FUBARs his season. Michael Saunders is the smart and safe pick for Seattle and he should land the job. LF Pick: Michael Saunders
  • Final 2 Rotation Spots: Erik Bedard vs. Luke French vs. Michael Pineda vs. David Pauley – Erik Bedard would be a tremendous number 4 starter on most teams if he is healthy. He has potential to produce as well as the Mariner’s 2 starter but his health is always a huge question mark considering he has not pitched very much over the past 3 years. With that being said Luke French should start as the 5th starter out West. A Bedard injury or French struggles could yield to the break through of top tier prospect Michael Pineda. Pauley is better suited as the long reliever. SP4&5: Erik Bedard & Luke French

There are two players who headline the Seattle Mariners. Everyone in baseball knows their names; Ichiro Suzuki and Felix Hernandez. Felix registered one of the most impressive seasons on the mound in recent history but he won’t win many games because of the lack of run support he will receive. Ichiro will be one of the few competent hitters in this line up. He is the model of consistency at the plate and we can obviously expect another 200 hits and an average anywhere between .310 and ,350. The only other big name hitter on the roster is Chone Figgins, who will attempt to bounce back from a disastrous 2010 in which he hit .259/.340/.306. Safeco is not kind to any hitter but I expect this to be Figgins in his career decline. Miguel Olivo and Jack Cust were brought in with the hopes of adding a little pop to the line up but expect that ballpark to eat them both alive. Brandon League will fill in as Seattle’s closer to start the year as David Aardsma battles a hip injury but that should not last too long.

WTP Projected 2011 Record: 62-100
