Mid Week Look @ Spring Training

  • Monday 2/28/11
  • The much anticipated Spring Training debut of Bryce Harper was nothing to write home about. He was 0 for 2 with 2 strikeouts off the bench against the Mets.
  • Brad Bergesen looked sharp in his first outing of the spring. 2 IP with 2 Ks.
  • Clayton Kershaw starts off spring right by throwing 3 innings and giving up no earned runs by striking out 3. He is poised for a huge year as LA’s ace.
  • Matt Dominguez, of the Florida Marlins, took Cardinals lefty deep. Dominguez is trying to take over the Marlins 3rd base job in 2011.
  • Strong 2 innings out of Fausto Carmona, possible trade bait for the Tribe?
  • Nate McLouth wants the center field job back in Atlanta. After a horrid year in 2010 in which he batted .190 he impressed on Monday by reaching base 4 times including 2 hits, 3 runs, 2 RBIs and a steal.
  • Kerry Wood was roughed up for 2 runs on 3 hits in his lone inning on Monday’s game against the Brewers.
  • Despite putting the ball on the ground all weekend, Derek Jeter collected his first hit of the spring.
  • The struggles continue; Dom Brown stays hitless on the spring and strikes out 2 more times.
  • Manny Rameriz has shown a sweet stroke early on this spring. He was 2 for 2 with a run and RBI on Monday.
  • Although playing 2nd base so far this spring, Mark DeRosa of the SF Giants, continues to make his case to be the teams starting left fielder, by going 2 for 3 with a big fly.

29 Days until Opening Day 2011

Tuesday 3/1/11

  • With the Braves’ closer job up for grabs, Johnny Venters, tosses his 2nd scoreless inning of the spring.
  • Two Giants starting pitchers threw on Tuesday. Tim Lincecum tossed 3 scoreless innings while Madison Bumgarner was not sharp allowing 6 hits and 3 runs in 2 innings. However, he did strike out 4 batters.
  • Joe Nathan is back, tossing a scoreless inning against the BoSox. Will he again be an elite closer?
  • I wish there was another story out of Phillies camp and can’t read too much into Cliff Lee giving up 2 runs but Dom Brown continues to be hitless through Tuesday. He is 0 for 12 so far this Spring.
  • Gio Gonzalez had some good stuff on Tuesday striking out 5 over 2 innings.
  • Good news out of Yankees camp. Jesus Montero gunned down a base stealer against the Pirates. Maybe this guy can play some defense.
  • Three of a kind for Chad Billingsley. 3 IP, 3 H, 3K.
  • Unlike on Monday, Bryce Harper, came threw with his first professional hit in Spring Training on Tuesday.
  • Why in the world would the Chicago White Sox give Phil Humber a shot to make their big league club? What a joke. That is all.
  • After 2.2 IP of scoreless ball, Chris Carpenter left his start for the Cards with a hamstring injury. Luckily is appears not to be anything serious or else they would be in trouble with him and Wainwright down.
  • Padres young ace, Mat Latos, struggled with his command in  his first spring start by walking 4 in only 1.1 innings. He may be a top candidate to get burned by the Verducci Effect this year.
  • Nick Markakis got his stick going against Tampa Bay by jacking 2 homers. Bounce back year?
  • Maybe Milton Bradley knew I was going to pick against him for the Mariners left field job and was going to say that he screws up every year one way or another and decided to collect 3 hits a 2 RBIs in yesterday’s game.
  • People really should not worry about Miguel Cabrera and his drinking affecting his bat. He stroked a double and drove in 3 runs last night for Detroit.
