Spring Training Notes 3/5/11

26 Days until Opening Day 2011

  • Chase Utley received a cortisone shot in his knee. Certainly cause for concern for the Phillies as their offense already has it’s handful of question marks.
  • The Twins announced that Tsuyoshi Nishioka will be their starting 2nd baseman. Not a big surprised but still not sure what to expect from the Japanese star.
  • Kendry Morales will not be ready for opening day. A walk off home run has really derailed this guy, hopefully he could bounce back when that ankle is finally healthy. *Note: Mike Scioscia disputes these claims.
  • Big Papi, David Ortiz, has been swinging a good bat this spring. He is 5 for 11 with a dinger, thus far.
  • Michael Young is swinging the bat like he has something to prove with 5 hits already in 4 games.
  • The 18 year old phenom, Bryce Harper, still has a mere 1 hit in 8 at bats thus far.
  • Carlos Silva and Aramis Ramirez had a bit of a scuffle in the Cubbies dugout this week which does not bode well for the chemistry of a Cubs team that is trying to build on a strong ending run last year.
  • Brennan Boesch and Austin Jackson have both been impressive at the dish during week 1. They will try to prove that their strong rookie showings in 2010 were not flukes.
  • The Yankees pitching, both guys trying to make the team and the youngsters, has been very impressive to this point. Francisco Cervelli has a fracture in his foot and will start the year on the DL. This opens the door for Jesus Montero to make the big club.
  • Carlos Beltran has agreed to move to right field. This is the smartest move for him considering his knee problems. Jason Bay has said that he feels completely back to normal after battling the effects of a concussion for most of last year.
  • The SF Giants deny claims that they will buy out Barry Zito’s contract. He then went out and pitched 3 innings of 1 run ball on Friday.
  • The Angels will be shopping around for a lead off hitter. Peter Bourjos may be one some day but he belongs in the 9 hole this year.
  • Jake Peavy pitched 2 scoreless innings while striking out 2 in his first Spring Training start. The key for Peavy will be staying healthy.
  • With Atlanta’s closer job up for grabs, Johnny Venters, is making a name for himself racking up 3 scoreless innings, so far, in which he has only given up 1 hit.
  • Now that he has dodged the Korean Army, Shin Soo Choo, says that he has his eyes set on a pennant in 2011 for the Indians. Good luck.
